Bilingual Couples Therapy

for couples living their love in more than one language

Patricia Maguet Levy

I’m Patrícia Maguet Levy and I have spent 30 years working with real, multicultural couples like yours.

I come from such a family myself, so I understand your challenges very well: my father is Haitian, my mother is Catalan, my grandfather is Turkish, and I have family all over the world… a true mix.

This is what makes more and more couples like yours trust me.

Because being able to mix two or even three languages during couples therapy helps the process move forward and flow much more smoothly.

And it’s that in your own language you can truly be yourself, expressing yourself with more confidence, authenticity, and ease.

If you’ve made it this far, you might be feeling that…

You have communication problems that are made worse by language barriers, leading to arguments and a constant feeling of confusion.
Your partner doesn’t recognize the effort it takes to live in a language and culture that aren’t your own, and they also don’t understand the loneliness and isolation that come with having an environment where no one speaks your language.
You struggle to find the words to explain to your partner how you feel and what you need, or you can’t connect with what your partner is trying to explain to you. And you’re growing more distant from each other.
Even though you’ve been living in your country for years, your partner not only doesn’t master your language but is also annoyed by some of the customs of your culture, which exasperates you. This creates misunderstandings with your family and friends, making your social life much more complicated. It also hurts you that they don’t understand how special your language is to you.
You feel like you’re missing nuances and important details in conversations, or you can’t express yourself authentically. Conversations don’t flow as spontaneously as you’d like.
You thought the love you have for each other would be enough to overcome these differences, but they’re becoming too much to handle, and you no longer know what to do.
If you identify with these challenges, then

Bilingual Couples Therapy is for you

So you can communicate, connect, and grow with your partner,

without language or cultural differences standing in the way

I’ve been living in England for many years, and even though I speak English perfectly, there are some topics I find hard to talk about. When it comes to expressing how I feel, during arguments, or when discussing sensitive and difficult topics, I express myself much better in Spanish.

My partner understands some Spanish but not everything, and honestly, having Patricia’s help to understand each other has been amazing. It’s such a relief, and we’re clearing up misunderstandings we’ve been carrying for years.

We’re still working on it, but the sessions provide a space that’s really bringing us closer together.

When “I love you” is said in two languages,

couples therapy needs to be bilingual

How Bilingual Couples Therapy Works
WITH THE MAGUET METHOD

We start with an initial 1-hour session, which serves as an opportunity for you to make first contact with your therapist and see if you feel comfortable and at ease.

It also allows the therapist to assess whether couples therapy is the best option for you or if another alternative might be more suitable.

"
The following sessions last an hour and a half because we know that with a couple, one hour isn’t enough.

Sessions are usually biweekly to ensure the process doesn’t lose momentum, giving you time to absorb what we work on and apply the tools you’re learning.

"
In addition, between sessions, you will have access to support materials at no extra cost so you can continue working at home.

These include videos, tests, exercises, readings… always simple and effective content.

What results can you achieve with bilingual couples therapy?

  • You will be able to improve communication and understanding with your partner and learn techniques to resolve conflicts before they become entrenched.
  • You will gain more tools to manage conflicts and everyday situations that are draining you both.
  • You will recover intimacy and emotional connection that allow you to have a harmonious and happy relationship.

You will be strengthening the foundations to build a shared future based on understanding and support. The result: your love won’t get lost in translation.

Would you like to know what couples

come to bilingual couples therapy like?

Couples with different native languages come, who can speak each other’s language and switch between them depending on the moment, the company, the topic of conversation…
There are couples with different native languages who don’t master each other’s language and choose the language they communicate in based on various factors such as the dominant language of the place they live, their ease of learning languages, and the greater possibility of finding work…
We also work with couples who have different native languages and choose a third language to communicate. For example, many couples communicate in English, even though their native languages are different.

In our case, we asked for help because having our children so far away from our families was becoming really tough.

It was the exhaustion, the nerves, the tension, and on top of that, being in an environment where it was hard for us to adapt and integrate. Since I speak the local language better, I was taking on a lot of things, and the relationship was at its breaking point. I couldn’t take it anymore.

Having a space where we could talk calmly and also do so in our own languages was like an oasis. Exactly what we needed to look at each other with new eyes.
