The couples around you who stay together and happy for years, even when life makes it hard…
How do they do it?
Let me tell you first what they DON’T do:
They don’t resign themselves to the idea that it’s normal to feel bad, argue a lot, or not have sex.
(Because even though disconnecting brings some relief, they know it doesn’t solve the real problem).
They don’t let time pass and “fix everything” on its own.
(Because they know that only makes things worse, leaving the relationship more damaged).
They don’t just put up with it for the kids’ sake.
(Instead, they look for a way to have a relationship that inspires their children, and that helps those kids build healthy relationships of their own one day).
After working with hundreds of couples over the last 30 years, I’ve found that they all reach a crisis for (at least) one of these reasons:
- Patterns learned from their families that make it harder to communicate or express their emotions.
- Differences between the two of them in what makes each feel loved, desired, or safe.
- The difficulties life throws at them — the kind that pushes even the strongest, most in-love couples to their limit…
Because maybe conflict scares you, or makes you explode easily.
Or you don’t know how to get your partner to understand what you need.
Or you exhaust yourself trying to care for and reach out to your partner, without it working.
And you end up feeling like you’re speaking different languages, impossible to understand each other.
Who in their right mind would choose to spend years feeling alone inside their own relationship?
My name isPatricia Maguet Levy
I’m a couples psychologist in Barcelona (and online too), specialized in helping you work through the difficulties in your relationship.
In other words:
My job is to help you and your partner understand each other, so you can have a relationship that’s calm, alive, and flowing — without endless therapy, and without ever making you feel judged.
I do this through couples therapy, and in particular through theMaguet Method, a structured program I’ve developed over more than 30 years of clinical experience working with thousands of couples.
I know what it’s like:
- To be in the middle of a crisis after an infidelity or a major disappointment,
- To not know if the relationship has a future, or if it’s even worth fighting for,
- To feel like loneliness is the main character in your relationship, without knowing how to get out of it,
- To live walking on eggshells, afraid a new fight will break out, knowing the tension and distance that always follows,
- To look at your partner and feel the distance growing and growing,
- To believe that you’re the problem.
I grew up believing that couples were doomed to fail sooner or later
My maternal grandfather was a Sephardic Jew from Istanbul who fled the war and came to Barcelona, thinking that speaking Ladino here would help him get by.
It was there that he met my Catalan grandmother, and together they had my mother and my aunts.
On the other side of the world, my paternal grandmother, mixed-race, grew up in Haiti, the daughter of a family whose life was upended by the Duvalier dictatorship.
There, she married my white grandfather, of French descent, a descendant of a missionary who left his mark on those lands.
Stories, countries, and languages that crossed paths to bring me here.
But there’s another side to this story:
my uncles, my parents, my cousins… almost all of them went through a divorce.
I grew up assuming that couples were doomed to fail, sooner or later.
- Why is it so hard to be in a relationship?
- Why do so many relationships — more than half — end in breakup?
- And the ones that don’t break up, why do so many of them never actually enjoy the relationship?
I wasn’t asking these questions in the abstract: I was asking them about myself.
I wanted to know if I, too, was doomed to repeat the pattern — or if there was another way.
That’s where my professional obsession of the last 34 years comes from: understanding why couples suffer, and above all, finding a way to help them break that pattern without it dragging on forever.
That’s where the Maguet Method comes from
